State University of Malang (Universitas Negeri Malang) lecturers have been working with the local government to strengthen the management of Village-Owned Enterprises (Badan Usaha Milik Desa / BUMDES) and educational tourism facilities in Sumberdem Coffee Village (Kampung Kopi Sumberdem). This collaboration aims to increase local economic potential and develop educational tourism in a coffee culture-rich area.
In an effort to strengthen the role of BUMDES as a driving force of the local economy, a team of lecturers from various disciplines has conducted mentoring and training for BUMDES administrators, pokdarwis and small and medium-sized enterprises. The training includes characterization of social institution management, standardization of educational tourism facilities and potential product development, and preparation of a follow-up action plan. The lecturers team also provided insights on the minimum services for visitors, both physical facilities and community culture and services.
Prof. Dr. Agung Winarno, M.M., one of the lecturers participating in this activity, stated “We are committed to assisting the community of Kampung Kopi Sumberdem in optimizing the potential of their BUMDES. Since this village has long been in partnership with the State University of Malang. We believe that with proper management strengthening and training, BUMDES can empower the local community and create a positive impact on the economic well-being of the village.”

Not only strengthening the BUMDES, but the community service team also focused on the requirements of rural human resources in offering Kampung Kopi educational tourism to the public. More specifically, Agung also mentioned that Sumberdem Village has huge potential as an educational tourism destination because there are certainly many visitors who are interested in learning more about coffee and the local culture of the village.

The village government also expressed its utmost appreciation for this collaborative endeavor. Purwati as Sumberdem’s Village Head stated “We really appreciate the collaboration between State University of Malang Lecturers and the village government in developing the potential of our village. The Sumberdem Coffee Village is a new featured destination that we hope will be able to attract tourists and empower the community on an ongoing basis, other than that we are also pioneering conservation efforts for fisheries and strengthening existing SMEs and this also requires guidance from the State University of Malang.”

With the strengthened management of BUMDES and the development of educational facilities in Kampung Kopi Sumberdem, it is expected that this village will become a successful model in exploring the potential of local resources to enhance community well-being and introduce Indonesian culture to the world.
